Families in Alabama now have more ways to support their child’s learning through the CHOOSE Act. Through this program, eligible students can use state funds for lessons, tutoring, and other educational opportunities, including private music lessons.

Everything runs through ClassWallet, an easy online system that lets families use their funds for approved lessons and programs. It’s a simple and flexible way to bring high quality learning, like music lessons from home, into your child’s routine.

What Is the Alabama CHOOSE Act?

The Alabama CHOOSE Act is a new education program that gives families more choice and flexibility in how their children learn. Through this program, eligible K through 12 students can receive Education Savings Account (ESA) funds, with most students receiving around $7,000 per year to use for approved educational services and materials.

How the CHOOSE Act Works

Once your child is approved for the CHOOSE Act program, you will receive funds through ClassWallet. This secure online system helps families manage and use their Education Savings Account funds safely and easily.

ClassWallet offers a few simple ways to use your funds:

  • Marketplace purchases: Shop for approved educational materials such as books, instruments, or technology directly from vendors listed in the ClassWallet marketplace
  • Direct pay: Tuition or service fees, such as payments for schools or tutoring services, can be sent directly to approved vendors.
  • Reimbursement: If you pay for an approved expense out of pocket, you can upload your receipt in ClassWallet to receive reimbursement.
Each provider must be approved in ClassWallet before purchases can be made. The platform automatically tracks your spending and remaining balance, making it simple to manage your funds throughout the school year.

What You Can Spend EFA Funds On

ESA funds can be used for many educational expenses that support a student’s learning goals. You can view the full list of eligible and restricted expenses on the official CHOOSE Act site or in their account. Common approved categories include:

Tutoring and enrichment lessons

Students can use funds for personalized instruction such as one-on-one online music lessons through programs like Lesson With You, academic tutoring, or language and art lessons. These services help strengthen skills and build confidence in a flexible learning setting.

Private school tuition and fees

Families can apply funds toward tuition, registration, and other related school costs in Alabama.

Curriculum and learning materials

Funds can cover textbooks, workbooks, educational software, and other approved learning resources for at home study including homeschooling programs.

Testing fees and educational therapy

Eligible expenses include academic testing, speech or occupational therapy, and other services that support a student’s progress.

Always check the approved vendor list in ClassWallet before making a purchase. Spending on non educational items or unapproved vendors could result in the payment being declined or delayed.
