Guitar Lessons

We highly recommend Lessons With You. Our eight-year-old son started online learning to play the guitar with his instructor, Jeff Frantom, in August. Jeff is a fabulous teacher and has great teaching techniques for children. He is patient and positive, and that has really kept my son very engaged and excited about his lessons with Jeff. He encourages our son and goes out of his way to find music that is relatable and interesting and helps him grow as a beginner guitar player.

FAQs

What are the differences between online guitar lessons and in-person lessons?

If you’re looking for flexible scheduling and affordable pricing, online lessons may be the perfect choice for you. Our live online guitar lessons are very similar to in-person lessons, and you can take them from the comfort of your own home with just a few equipment. This way, you can learn guitar at your own pace and schedule. Plus, many top guitar teachers, including our own, offer online lessons that provide the same high-quality instruction as in-person lessons, but at lower overall cost.

In-person guitar lessons are ideal for those willing to travel to the lesson studio and have a higher budget. They are recommended for advanced students who are serious about sound control and improving their performance skills for competitions and auditions.

What's the best age to start guitar?

The best age for a child to begin guitar lessons is between the ages of 7 and 9. It also depends on your child’s individual development and their interest in learning to play guitar. At Lesson With You, we welcome students aged 7 and up, and for those under 10, we recommend that a parent be present during lessons. For children who are too young to read music, our instructors provide instruction with fun activities like rhythm games, ear training, and improvisation.

For adults, it’s never too late to begin guitar lessons.  Find a suitable lesson time and try to practice the guitar consistently.

How do live online guitar lessons work?

For live online guitar lessons, students and teachers use video chat platforms such as Zoom, GoogleMeet, and Skype. We use Zoom for our lessons. To begin the trial, you’ll need a physical guitar, a computer or laptop, and high-speed internet.

At Lesson With You, once you submit the signup form, our customer service team will match you with a guitar teacher who is the perfect fit in terms of teaching style, personality, and schedule. If you have any specific preferences, you can include them as additional requests in the form we send you later.

Once your trial lesson is scheduled, we will also provide guidance on setting up the Zoom meeting. After the trial lesson, our client engagement team will follow up with you.

What can I expect from my first free guitar lesson?

First, you will learn how to set up the audio and video chat platform, position your guitar (and yourself), and adjust the screen. You can expect to learn both the technical and artistic aspects of guitar music, as well as how to develop a practice routine that suits your level and schedule.

Teachers may suggest warm-ups and technical exercises to help you build strength in your fingers for playing guitar. You’ll also learn and practice chord progressions, exploring the harmony behind popular songs. During the lesson, your instructor will give feedback on your guitar technique, finger placement, musical shaping, and interpretation. You’ll also get guidance on your posture, music reading skills, understanding of theory, and expanding your guitar repertoire.

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average price for a half hour guitar lesson is $37. According to our recent guitar lessons cost guide, online lessons using video chats typically charge between $35 and $40 for a half hour lesson. Local guitar lessons charge about $40 for a half hour lesson, while in-person group lessons can cost $20 per half-hour.

At Lesson With You, we offer competitive, fixed rates of $35 for a half hour lesson, $50 for 45 minutes, and $65 per hour.

How often should I take guitar lessons?

When it comes to the frequency of guitar lessons, it depends on your schedule, budget, and goals. For beginners to intermediate learners, our guitar teachers suggest taking weekly lessons to build a strong foundation and develop a consistent practice routine. Our weekly-based lessons are designed to help guitar students learn guitar skills effectively and make steady progress.

If you’re an advanced student with over 5 years of lesson experience and a strong commitment to performing, we recommend taking guitar lessons twice a week.

What equipment do I need for live online guitar lessons?

At Lesson With You, guitar students will need a few essential items for their lessons, in addition to high-speed internet. These include a computer or laptop, a physical guitar, and lesson books. While using an external microphone is recommended, it’s not required. You may also want to consider getting a music stand.

For any questions or concerns regarding the lessons, our client service team is here to assist you. Just reach out to us, and we’ll be more than happy to help!

What techniques will I learn during the guitar lessons?

In guitar lessons, you’ll learn a variety of techniques to create steady and nice sounds on the guitar, including strumming, fingerpicking, and playing chord progressions. You’ll also dive into music theory, sight-reading, ear training, and improvisation to build a strong musical foundation. Your guitar instructor will give you specific techniques to practice, exercises and drills, and music to work on each week before your next lesson.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

The time it takes to become skilled in guitar depends on factors like practice dedication, natural talent, the quality of instruction, and personal goals. Some students may grasp basic guitar techniques within a few months of consistent practice, while others might take around six months to master them.

Generally, when you take guitar lessons from professionals, you’ll experience quick improvement right from the start. But without the consistent practice, the rate of growth may slow down after a few months.

Remember, progress in guitar, just like in piano or violin, isn’t always a straight line. The key is to practice regularly, so you can continue improving your guitar skills and enjoying the learning along the way.

Which is right for me: finger picking or strumming?

The choice between finger-picking and strumming depends on your musical taste, your preferred guitar style, and your goals.  Generally, finger-picking works well for folk or classical genres. Strumming is ideal for genres like rock and pop. For the long term, it’s best to learn both techniques. This way, you can expand your guitar skills and easily transition between different guitar styles if you ever wish to explore them.

I don't want to learn to read music - is that okay for guitar?

Learning to read music isn’t required for playing the guitar, but it can help you become a better guitarist and make quicker progress in the long run.

Reading music helps you understand basic music theory and expand your repertoire across different genres. If you plan to play in a band, it’s highly recommended, as it helps you understand and play along other melodies and accompaniment. Certainly, it’s a valuable skill when you plan to create your own music and share your compositions with others.

What's the difference between guitar tab and full sight-reading?

Guitar tab is a simplified notation method, specifically designed for the guitar, indicating where to place fingers on the frets. Full sight-reading is a universal musical language used in all instruments, requiring the reading of notes, rhythms, dynamics, and more. Tabs are simpler to learn and read, while sight-reading is comprehensive and can help you learn other instruments quickly.

How often should I practice guitar to see progress?

When it comes to how often and how long you should practice guitar, it all depends on your schedule, age, level, and goals. Our teachers suggest setting aside a consistent time each day for practice, aiming for an average of 15 minutes.

As you start feeling more comfortable with practicing guitar, you can gradually increase your practice time to 20 minutes or more per week. For children and beginners, around 10 minutes of daily practice is a good starting point, while intermediate learners can begin with 20-minute sessions.

Remember, the key is to practice regularly and make steady progress to improve your guitar skills. But if you’re practicing regularly and not seeing progress, it could be due to the quality of your practice. In this case, it’s a great idea to ask for practice tips and guidance from the professionals.
