What Determines Trumpet Lesson Costs?

Teacher Level

Trumpet teachers without music degrees tend to charge about $20 per hour but they don’t offer a professional level trumpet instruction.

Teachers who have a music degree that isn’t trumpet related, such as ones with a Bachelor’s in trombone who have some trumpet skills, will often charge $45 per hour. They generally have a solid understanding of music, but they don’t have advanced trumpet performing skills and are very limited in giving practical and detailed instruction. Note that it’s important to teach beginners proper techniques, as using improper techniques can lead to harm over time.

Your potential trumpet teacher should have at least a Bachelor’s degree in trumpet, and lessons with those teachers range from $50-$70 per hour on average. Instructors with a Master’s or Doctorate typically charge $100 per hour lesson.

Q. Should beginners learn trumpet from professional instructors?

Certainly! It’s best for beginners to learn trumpet the correct way from the start. A professional trumpet teacher knows how to take a student smoothly from a beginner to an advanced level, so you don’t develop any bad habits. Sometimes, it can take years for students to correct bad habits related to posture, breathing, tone production and reading music. The sooner you have an expert trumpet instructor, the faster you will make real progress that sets you up for future advancement.

In-person vs Online Lessons

Online trumpet lessons are generally the most affordable option since the lessons can be set up with a few digital equipment in the comfort of your home. In-person lessons at a teacher’s studio may cost an average of $10 more, while having the instructor visit your home may add an additional $10.

In-person prices can vary widely though depending on the number of qualified trumpet teachers in your area. If you’re looking for expert trumpet teachers at reasonable prices, live online lessons may be your best bet.

Pre-recorded vs Live Lessons

If you’re looking for the cheapest possible trumpet lessons, there is the option of pre-recorded lessons. These are typically video or app-based lessons that aim to teach you foundational skills for a monthly fee.

Unfortunately, pre-recorded lessons cannot be compared to the quality of live one-on-one lessons where the teacher can customize the lesson material just for you, provide live feedback on your playing in real time, and help you become better at practicing and performing. For those looking to progress quickly, live 1-on-1 lessons are the better choice. At Lesson With You, you can find affordable trumpet lessons starting at just $35 for a half hour.

What Do I Learn in Trumpet Lessons?

Trumpet Techniques

In trumpet lessons, students typically learn proper embouchure formation, breath control, articulation, and finger technique. Proper embouchure formation is one of the most essential skill needed for nice tone production and control. In addition, trumpet students are often guided to develop their sight-reading and ear training skills to a certain level.

Music Theory

Trumpet students can learn music theory concepts such as scales, chords, harmony, rhythm, and musical notation. Specifically, they learn how to identify different types of chords and scales, understand the basics of harmony, and analyze musical compositions. Music theory is essential for reading music, playing trumpet, and composing.

Repertoire

During trumpet lessons, the instructor and student work together on building a good repertoire. The teacher typically suggests music for the student based on their level, goals and interests. Once the student masters the piece, the teacher introduces them to new music styles, helping them to expand their trumpet repertoire.

Practice Methods

Trumpet students learn effective practice methods to develop techniques and expand their repertoire. Professional trumpet teachers can help students set daily to monthly goals and create practice guides to help them achieve their goals efficiently. If you’re struggling with planning your trumpet practice, it’s best to ask your teacher for practice tips that are tailored to your age and level.
