What equipment and technology do you use for online piano lessons?
At Lesson With You, piano students will need lesson equipment in addition to a high-speed internet connection. This includes a piano or an 88-key keyboard, a computer or laptop, and lesson books. We use Zoom as our live lesson platform.
We do not recommend using a mobile device for lessons. If you have any questions or concerns about the equipment or lesson setup, feel free to reach out to our client service team, and we’ll be happy to assist you!
What type of piano or keyboard should I buy?
When purchasing a keyboard, there are three factors to consider: 88 keys, weighted keys, and sound quality. Regardless of your skill level, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced pianist, you should buy a piano with at least 88 keys. Make sure to get a keyboard with fully weighted keys, which typically provide good sound quality and offer greater touch sensitivity and dynamic range similar to an acoustic piano.

Why should I start with classical piano lessons before trying other styles?
Classical piano lessons help you build essential skills such as proper hand technique, rhythm control, note reading, and musical expression. These lessons offer a clear and structured approach, which is especially helpful if you are just beginning or returning to piano after some time away.
With a strong foundation in place, it becomes much easier to explore other styles like pop or jazz. Many experienced musicians start with classical training because it supports well-rounded musical development and gives you the tools to grow in any direction.
How often should I practice piano, and for how long?
The frequency and duration of piano practice may vary depending on your schedule, age, level and goals. Our piano teachers recommend setting aside a consistent time each day for practice, ideally for an average of 15 minutes for beginners and intermediate piano students. For adults or children who have more time to practice, we suggest practicing for an average of 20 minutes each day.
If daily practice isn’t realistic, you or your child can try practicing for about 15 minutes per session, three times a week. The key is to practice consistently, commit to the routine and enjoy learning piano over time.

How long does it actually take for me to learn piano?
Your piano learning speed depends on the goals, practice habits, and natural skill level. With steady practice and professional online instruction, many classical piano students can build a solid foundation in about two years with weekly piano lessons.
What also matters is expanding your repertoire, along with consistent practice to review past materials and learn new techniques. Try not to take long breaks from lessons or practice, as this can significantly impact your learning.
What can I expect out of live online piano lessons as a beginner?
In piano lessons, you will first learn how to set up the keyboard and screen for comfortable playing. You will start exploring the instrument and gradually build both technical skills and musical creativity, all while developing a practice routine suited to your age and level.
Teachers often include simple warm-ups and exercises to help strengthen finger coordination once you begin reading the notes. During lessons, you will play music you’ve been practicing and get tips on how to improve the technique, posture, and musical expression. Over time, you’ll grow in music reading, theory, and confidence with a variety of pieces.

Are live online piano lessons better than apps or pre-recorded classes?
Absolutely! Unlike self-learning piano from books, apps, and pre-recorded classes, live online lessons let you interact with teachers and get real-time feedback. During these live sessions, your instructor can observe and listen to your piano playing and give practical guidance on how to improve every aspect. They can also demonstrate the correct piano techniques, so you can observe their finger movements in real-time.
This interactive setting, involving observation, imitation, practice, and improvement, is the most effective way to learn piano.
