What Determines Flute Lesson Costs?

Flute Teacher Level

Flute teachers who don’t have formal music degrees typically charge between $35-$40 per hour, but their instruction may not be at a professional level.

Some instructors have a degree in another instrument—such as clarinet or saxophone—but also teach flute. These teachers usually charge $35-$50 per hour. While they may have a strong general knowledge of music, they might not have the advanced flute-playing skills needed to provide in-depth technical guidance. This can lead to beginners picking up bad habits that are tough to unlearn.

To get the best instruction, look for a flute teacher with at least a Bachelor’s degree in flute. Their rates generally range from $55-$65 per hour, while those with a Master’s or Doctorate in flute typically charge $65-$75 per hour.

In-person vs Online Lessons

Online flute lessons are generally the most affordable, with an average increase of about $10 for in-person lessons at a teacher’s studio, and a small additional increase to have the teacher visit your home.

In-person flute lesson costs can vary widely, depending on the number of qualified flute teachers in your area. If you’re searching for great flute teachers at reasonable prices, live online flute lessons are the way to go. They offer the professional instruction, flexible scheduling, and fantastic pricing.

Recorded vs Live Lessons

If you’re looking for the cheapest possible flute lessons, there is the option of pre-recorded lessons.

These are typically video or app-based lessons that aim to teach you basic flute skills and technique for a monthly fee. Unfortunately, these lessons cannot compare to the quality of live one-on-one lessons where the live flute instructor can customize the lesson material for you, provide constant feedback in real time, and guide you to become better at practicing and performing.

Any flute student who is interested in becoming a capable flutist is better off looking for live 1-on-1 lessons, such as the $35 half hour lessons offered through Lesson With You.

Do Beginners Need Professional Flute Teachers at First?

Some people think you only need a professional flute teacher once you’re more advanced, but getting the right instruction early on makes a huge difference. A professional flute teacher helps beginners build good habits in breathing, posture, and technique so you don’t struggle with fixing bad habits later.

To make the most of lessons, it’s important to plan your budget and commit to at least a year of regular practice and instruction for steady progress.

What Do Students Learn in Flute Lessons?

Flute Techniques

Flute lessons cover a variety of techniques, from proper breathing and finger placement to posture and tone control. Breathing exercises are key for developing a rich sound, and teachers will guide students on when and how to breathe efficiently while playing.

You’ll also work on finger placement, making it easier to switch between notes and scales without mistakes. Posture is another big focus, and your teacher will show you how to hold the flute comfortably while using your core for breath support.

Music Theory and Note Reading

Music theory is a big part of learning the flute. You’ll work on scales, chords, and rhythm, which help you understand how music is structured. Because the flute plays flowing melodies, teachers also focus on rhythm accuracy, steady counting, and smooth transitions between notes.

Flute Repertoire

A flute teacher will introduce you to different styles of music, from classical and jazz to pop. If you’ve mostly played one genre but want to try something new, your teacher can help you choose pieces that challenge and inspire you.

How to Find the Most Affordable Flute Lessons

We surveyed over 100 flute teachers across our own site, Lesson With You, and three other major sites, Wyzant, Lessons.com and Thumbtack.com, using a random zip code as the location. We specifically looked for teachers who have a degree in flute and offer online lessons.

Lesson With You has a set price of $65 per hour and indeed the price value is better than any other lesson site we’ve found. Each flute teacher at Lesson With You has at least a Bachelor’s degree in flute. Lessons are only $65 per hour, making the live online flute lessons an incredible value. Besides, there’s a free trial with no contracts required.

Wyzant had the highest average price among qualified flute teachers, at $65 per hour. Even finding a teacher who didn’t specifically major in flute, such as one with general woodwind performance or music education degree, didn’t do much to lower the price, averaging $72 per hour.

Thumbtack has a slightly lower average price, at $62 among the flute teachers we surveyed. Many of the teachers listed either didn’t have a music degree or didn’t major in flute in college.

Lessons.com had the lowest average price at $60 per hour, but many teachers didn’t major in flute and also teach other instruments like piano or saxophone. The free trial lesson is only 15 minutes, which may not be enough to assess their teaching style.

Wyzant, Lessons.com and Thumbtack all have a very large number of in-person or online flute teachers, so surely there are some good deals, but finding teachers whose education and lesson costs matched that of the teachers at Lesson With You is difficult and time consuming.
