Ms G. was wonderful at keeping them both engaged virtually and also ensuring they had fun at their own pace. We look forward to many more piano lessons.

What's the best age for a child to start piano lessons?

The ideal age for a child to begin piano lessons is between the ages of 7 and 9. It also depends on your child’s individual development, especially their motor skills and their interest in learning the piano. What type of piano or keyboard should I buy?

When purchasing a keyboard, there are three factors to consider: 88 keys, weighted keys, and sound quality. Regardless of your skill level, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced pianist, you should buy a piano with at least 88 keys. Make sure to get a keyboard with fully weighted keys, which typically provide good sound quality and offer greater touch sensitivity and dynamic range similar to an acoustic piano.

When it comes to how often and how long your child should practice piano, it depends on their homeschool schedule, age, level, and goals. Our piano teachers recommend setting aside a consistent time every day for about 15 minutes of practice. This gives your child a chance to focus and work on the material they’re learning.

For children under 10, it’s recommended to practice for an average of 10 minutes each day, while for older kids, 15 to 20 minutes per session is a good starting point. The key is to practice consistently, commit to the routine and enjoy learning piano over time.

What will my child learn in the lessons?

In live online piano lessons, students learn the technical and artistic aspects of piano music while developing a healthy and fun practice routine. Our piano teachers may suggest warm-up and technical exercises to help your child build strength and dexterity in their fingers. They will also learn how to read music, understand music theory, and practice piano effectively with various strategies to improve their playing.

For children aged between 7 and 12, it’s important that they understand the concepts and also apply them during practice. Our instructors make sure that every child fully understands and remembers the concept each time.

Which piano curriculum is best for homeschoolers?

There are various piano curriculums available for homeschoolers, including method books. Our piano teachers suggest using traditional method books like Faber and Alfred’s as they combine music theory and repertoire practice. Some students who have a specific interest in a musical style, such as Jazz, may use supplemental material provided by the instructors. The suitable curriculum for each student will depend on their age, skill level, goals and learning style preferred by the parents.

Can homeschoolers prepare for music exams or competitions?

Certainly! Preparing for exams, auditions or competitions is a great idea for children to develop a strong work ethic and goal-oriented mindset. We welcome all students who are interested in preparing for music exams or competitions. Our professional piano teachers have extensive experience in selecting competition repertoire and preparing students for performances. If you are interested in this idea, please let our client support team know when you request a trial lesson.

Are live online piano lessons better than apps or pre-recorded classes?

Absolutely! Unlike self-learning piano from books, apps, and pre-recorded classes, live online lessons let your child interact with teachers and get real-time feedback. During these live sessions, the instructor can observe and listen to your child’s piano playing and give practical guidance on how to improve every aspect. They can also demonstrate the correct piano techniques, so your kid can observe their finger movements and imitate the playing in real-time. Besides, children need clear guidance on how to practice piano with focus.

This interactive setting, involving observation, imitation, practice, and improvement, is the most effective way to learn piano.
