What Determines Flute Lesson Costs in Victoria?
Flute Teacher Level
Flute instructors without music degrees tend to charge between $30-$40 per hour but they do not offer a professional level instruction.
Teachers who have a music degree that isn’t flute related, such as ones with a Bachelor’s in clarinet or saxophone who have some flute skills, will often charge $30-$50 per hour. They generally have a solid understanding of music, but they don’t have advanced flute performing skills and are very limited in giving practical instruction. This increases the risk that they will teach beginners bad habits that will be harmful and hard to fix over time.
Ideally, the flute teacher will have at least a Bachelor’s degree in flute, and lessons with those teachers range from $50-$60 per hour on average. Teachers with a Master’s or Doctorate in flute typically charge $60-$70 per hour.
Q. Should beginners take flute lessons from professional teachers from the start?
Certainly! It may seem like professional flute teachers are only for advanced students, but it’s actually best for beginners to learn to play flute correctly and safely right from the start. It’s essential for beginners to have flute instructors who know how to guide you smoothly from a beginner to an advanced level, so you don’t develop any bad singing habits. Sometimes, it can take years for students to correct bad habits related to posture, breathing and finger placement.

In-person vs Online Lessons
Online flute lessons are generally the most affordable, with an average increase of about $10 for in-person lessons at a teacher’s studio, and a small additional increase to have the teacher visit your home.
In-person flute lesson costs can vary widely, depending on the number of qualified flute teachers in your area. To find highly-qualified teachers at reasonable prices, live online flute lessons will be your best bet.
Recorded vs Live Lessons
If you’re looking for the cheapest possible flute lessons, there is the option of pre-recorded lessons.
These are typically video or app-based lessons that aim to teach you basic flute skills and technique for a monthly fee. Unfortunately, these lessons cannot compare to the quality of live one-on-one lessons where the live flute instructor can customize the lesson material for you, provide constant feedback in real time, and guide you to become better at practicing and performing.
Any flute student who is interested in becoming a capable flutist is better off looking for live 1-on-1 lessons, such as the $30 half hour lessons offered through Lesson With You.
What Do You Learn in Flute Lessons?
In flute lessons, students learn a wide range of techniques, such as breathing, fingering and posture. For example, breathing exercises are important for students to control the tone. Flute teachers give instructions on how to breathe properly, including when and how to blow air into the flute.
Flute instructors also help students develop their finger placement by teaching how to smoothly transition notes and scales between each other. Posture is another concept taught in flute lessons, and teachers provide instruction on how to hold the flute properly and use the core muscles to support playing.
Music Theory and Reading Music
Students learn basic music theory concepts such as scales, chords, patterns and rhythms, which are important for analyzing and understanding the music. As the flute produces horizontal sounds, teachers provide detailed instruction on reading accurate rhythms, counting and keeping steady beats and practicing smooth transitions between notes.
Flute teachers help students choose repertoire that matches their musical interests and level from a wide range of music genres and styles. If you have primarily played classical music but want to explore different levels and styles, your teacher can suggest music such as Jazz, Pop, or more challenging repertoire.
How to Find the Most Affordable Flute Lessons in Victoria, Texas
We surveyed over 100 flute teachers across our own site, Lesson With You, and two other major sites, Wyzant and Thumbtack.com, using a random zip code as the location. We specifically looked for teachers who have a degree in flute and offer online lessons.
Lesson With You has a set price of $55 per hour and indeed the price value is better than any other lesson site we’ve found. Each flute teacher at Lesson With You has at least a Bachelor’s degree in flute performance, including from schools such as Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and University of Oregon. Lessons are only $55 per hour, making the live online flute lessons an incredible value.
Wyzant had the highest average price among qualified flute teachers, at $65 per hour. Even finding a teacher who didn’t specifically major in flute, such as one with general woodwind performance or music education degree, didn’t do much to lower the price, averaging $72 per hour.
Thumbtack has a slightly lower average price, at $58 among the flute teachers we surveyed. Many of the teachers listed either didn’t have a music degree or didn’t major in flute in college.
Wyzant and Thumbtack both have a very large number of in-person or online flute teachers, so surely there are some good deals, but finding teachers whose education and lesson costs matched that of the teachers at Lesson With You is difficult and time consuming.
